Senator Angela Alsobrooks – U.S. Senator for Maryland
Angela Alsobrooks is a United States Senator representing Maryland. Elected in 2024, she is the first Black woman to represent the state in the U.S. Senate. A lifelong Maryland resident, Alsobrooks has spent the majority of her career in public service, with a focus on public safety, economic development, and expanding opportunities for working families.
Alsobrooks earned her undergraduate degree from Duke University and her law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law. She began her legal career as a law clerk in the Howard County and Baltimore City Circuit Courts. She later joined the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, becoming the office’s first full-time prosecutor assigned to handle domestic violence cases.
In 2010, Alsobrooks was elected State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County, becoming both the youngest person and the first woman elected to that position. In her two terms as State’s Attorney, she focused on prosecution of violent crime and initiatives to support victims. During her tenure, the county reported a decline in violent crime, including a drop in homicides and robberies.
In 2018, Alsobrooks was elected as County Executive of Prince George’s County. As the chief executive of Maryland’s second-largest jurisdiction, she prioritized job creation, infrastructure investment, and education. Under her leadership, the county saw continued economic growth and development, as well as public health initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alsobrooks was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2024 and sworn into office in January 2025. In the Senate, she has identified priorities including economic mobility, public safety, healthcare access, and investments in children and families.
She resides in Prince George’s County and is the mother of one daughter, Alex.
