Congressman Derek Tran proudly represents California’s 45th Congressional District. Serving his first term in Congress, Congressman Tran is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and House Small Business Committee where he focuses on national security, economic issues, consumer protections, and access to capital for small business owners and entrepreneurs.
Congressman Tran’s father fled Vietnam after the 1975 Fall of Saigon as boat people. Their boat capsized, killing his wife and children. His father would later meet his mother and made a second and successful attempt to flee Vietnam’s communist regime. After spending approximately a year at a refugee camp they made it to the United States in early 1980. Congressman Tran was born and raised in Los Angeles County.
When he turned 18, Congressman Tran enlisted in the United States Army Reserve. He served for eight years and completed his assignment at the Joint Forces Training Base at Los Alamitos. He was activated for Operation Noble Eagle / Enduring Freedom before earning an honorable discharge. He received his B.S. in Economics-Finance from Bentley University and a Juris Doctor degree from Glendale University College of Law. He moved to Orange County, California in 2012.
Congressman Tran fought on behalf of consumers and workers as an attorney. He has served on the board of the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles and California. Congressman Tran’s civic experience includes his time working on public safety policy for the Mayor of Los Angeles and was a traffic commissioner for the City of Orange. Congressman Tran is also a small business owner, co-owning an independent pharmacy with his wife Michelle.
Congressman Tran and his wife Michelle have three children: their son Bryson, daughter Olivia, and son Landen.
