Senator John R. Curtis represents Utah in the United States Senate. He brings experience in local government, small business, and national legislative service to his role in the Senate, with a focus on energy policy, public lands, fiscal responsibility, and constituent engagement.
Before his election to the Senate, Curtis served seven years in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Utah’s 3rd Congressional District. During his time in the House, he sponsored and passed 21 bills into law, addressing a range of issues including public land management, anti-human trafficking measures, and regulatory reform affecting small businesses. He founded the Conservative Climate Caucus to encourage climate policy discussions within the Republican Party and was recognized by the nonpartisan Center for Effective Lawmaking as one of the most effective Republican members of Congress.
In 2023, his office was acknowledged by the Congressional Management Foundation for its accessibility and accountability to constituents.
Curtis has emphasized energy policy throughout his time in Congress, advocating for expanded use of U.S. energy resources—including clean fuels—as part of a broader strategy for economic growth, national security, and emissions reduction. His policy interests also include U.S.-China relations, government spending, and long-term reforms to social safety net programs.
Prior to serving in Congress, Curtis was the mayor of Provo, Utah, from 2009 to 2017. During his tenure, he focused on municipal development, public safety, and citizen engagement. He previously worked as a small business owner and in the private sector.
Senator Curtis holds a degree from Brigham Young University and has been involved in civic and business leadership within Utah for decades. He and his wife, Sue, have been married for over 40 years and are the parents of six children and grandparents to 17. He often cites his family and community values as central to his approach to public service.
