Profile
Senator Ruben Gallego – U.S. Senator for Arizona
Senator Ruben Gallego is a United States Senator representing Arizona. The son of immigrants from Colombia and Mexico, he was raised in a working-class household by a single mother in Chicago. Throughout his youth, he held a variety of jobs—including in food service, construction, and a meat-packing plant—to help support his family.
Senator Gallego became the first member of his family to attend college, graduating from Harvard University. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and deployed to Iraq in 2005 as an infantryman with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines. His unit experienced significant combat, with heavy casualties. That experience has informed his ongoing work on military and veterans’ issues, including advocating for strategic planning in military operations and the care and support of service members and their families.
Gallego began his public service career in the Arizona House of Representatives, where he was elected in 2010. During his tenure, he worked on bipartisan efforts to expand Medicaid and improve access to in-state tuition for veterans.
In 2014, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for a decade. While in the House, Gallego held leadership roles on the Armed Services and Natural Resources Committees, focusing on national defense, veterans’ affairs, water security, and public lands in Arizona.
He was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2024 and sworn in on January 3, 2025. In the Senate, he has continued his legislative focus on economic opportunity, veterans’ services, infrastructure, and environmental protection.
Senator Gallego resides in South Phoenix with his wife, Sydney, their son Michael, and daughter Isla.
